Geïnspireerd door de idealen van de Franse revolutie gingen de patriotten in 1785 een samenwerking aan met het Frankrijk van Napoleon. De patriotten waren fel gekant tegen het Huis van Oranje. Dit lied is geschreven vanuit een Oranjegezind perspectief. De groep die het opnam voor erfstadhouder Willem V noemde zichzelf 'schoppen'.
