Melodie: Boerenlieties V (1710)
[The bloodiest battle in the War of the Spanish Succession was the one near the Northern French hamlet of Malplaquet (11 September 1709). Technically speaking the allies won the victory -the French left the battlefield first- but the losses were enormous. The estimates of the allied dead range from 18,000 to 24,000 and on the French side from 11,000 to 15,000. The French general Villars wrote to Louis XIV: 'If God lets us lose one more battle like that, Your Majesty can count on all his enemies being destroyed.' Especially the Dutch army was seriously weakened by this Pyrrhic victory.

We have march melodies for the following generals in the battle:]

[26] Boufflers's March
Louis-Fran?ois de Boufflers (1644-1711), the French commander during the siege of Lille and the one who led an orderly French retreat at the end of the battle near Malplaquet, when chief commander Villars was put out of the fighting. The melody known in the Republic as Boufflers's March is, amazingly enough, by the Englishman Jeremiah Clarke, who composed it around 1700 as the Prince of Denmark's Marche -no doubt for Prince George of Denmark (1653-1708), the consort of the British Queen Anne. The marche has become worldfamous under the title Trumpet Voluntary.

Melody: Boerenlieties V (1710)
