| 9. MY MOST BELOVED LOVE, I HONOUR FULLY The singer had the best intentions, but made in his zeal a great error, and thereby many enemies.
A lamentation of the soul to God, on account of the burden of the cross.
Tune: Where are all my friends.
My most beloved love, I honour fully, You are my heart's treasure; To you will I turn myself, I am satiated with the world. It can give me in this life No comfort.
According to human nature I should indeed desire To live here to your prize, That almost no one knows Or can find neither this nor that To fault.
But as I to my ability Had turned myself to the best, So I was led astray, And became blind in my wisdom: You let me come to shame From my enemies.
For the things in which I meant To be sincere and good, Were stood on end And made many furious. They appeared to tear at me At all hours.
Oh God, how do the eyes Differ from sight? People scarcely know what deceives them Or how it is in the light, Had each one not kept his conscience In secret.
But you are the one who makes The heart certain in everything, In pain, in oppression, in hurting Each one tastes the food, After it is placed In front of him.
Be on your guard.
