18. SINTE NICLAES BISSCHOP

[>>Het Sint-Nicolaasfeest/ The Feast of Saint Nicholas, ca 1665-68 (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam).]

Sinte Niclaes Bisschop,
Goet heylich man;
Wilje wat in mijn schoentje geeven,
Godt loont u dan.
Geefft men een Beurs met bellen,
Soo sal ick je niet meer quellen.
Soo langhe als het Godt geliefft,
Heb ick Sinte Niclaesjen lieff.

The Roman Catholic Steen liked to paint festivities that did not meet with the Calvinists' approval, and the feast of Saint Nicholas was but one example of this. The Dutch still celebrate this festival on December 5 with presents and sweets for children. If they have not been good, they get the stick, although the singing of songs also helps greatly in getting presents. All of these various elements can be seen in Steen's painting; the boy on the right is singing with complete abandon, right underneath the chimney through which Saint Nicholas will bring the presents. He may well be singing the only Saint Nicholas song that has come down to us from the Golden Age, thanks to an angry Protestant minister who described the Roman Catholic excesses in great detail.
