| [8] CONCERNING THE DISCORD BETWEEN THE CHRISTIAN PRINCES A poem from 1634 about the international political situation. Germany was greatly weakened after an unfortunate war with Sweden and the dismissal of General Wa/Ienberg in 1634 and possibly could not therefore resist the Turkish threat. This was a very real threat in Vondel's time: Murad IV went to war against Venice and other countries between 1632 and 163 7. According to Vonde/ this is how the quarrel between the Christian nations was to the advantage of the Infidel.
The Christian princes Contend greatly against each other; The whole of Christendom is in difficulties And in extreme danger, As a ship whose mast has been cut through Will soon be shipwrecked And be caught on the lee shore.
The foul Turk, Christianity's torment, Observes our discords. Our ancient foe laughs up his sleeve And hopes to strike his claws » Red with blood And befouled with dust -- Into the middle of that senseless fight That he might make an end to such discord.
If he succeeds in his intent With his savage horde 0f unexpectedly attacking The weakened borders of the Christian world and killing and many folk, (God be with us!) what a day of mourning and lamentation that shall be!
The army will Flow like a torrent Over the whole of Germany And snort like a mare; It will rinse its bloodied reins clean In the Rhine at Cologne' The Rhine will be its reward.
Even in the antipodes Where our opposites Walk upside down, People will hear with fear Of how we were subjected To the mockery of God's enemies By Mohammed's sword.
Then people will realise how they erred In having brought this prey to light Through their internecine strife And how they had baited the wolves Against Christ's sheepfold. They have sought their own punishment And cry aloud and sigh until exhausted.
0 Jesus, turn this dreadful vision aside. Drive the dark cloud away. Let the Christian banner once more be planted on the Holy Grave by thy faithful people to the punishment of the Turks and the shaming of Hell.
Let the bloodthirsty hound, cursed by all. Return to Mecca with his tail between his legs Like a cowardly cur. By his own hearth In a dark corner Let him stretch out in pleasure And leave your kingdom in peace.
