13. HOOGHER DORIS NIET, MIJN GLOEDTJE (Pieter Cornelisz Hooft)
| [13] NO HIGHER, DORIS, MY LOVE Try, Doris, to create some calm during Love's games, for the poet is quickly succumbing under them. I revel in your singing and in your string music. All of those musical sounds strike deep into my soul. as do your eyes, Cupid's lightning flashes. Go ahead then, let your better side be seen. Cure my flesh that has been much burdened by Cupid's bow and arrows. before that lad 's fierce heat robs away my soul. The plentiful rhymes are grafted upon Gastoldi's song Se ben vedi, o vita mia, to which Hooft had originally written a song text.
No higher, Doris my love, Be a little careful with me. Far too great is this blessed Joy In which I am sunk. The smiles, The complainings, With small amounts, The days The nights, You must always mix Something bitter With what is too sweetly delicious, Else I will suffocate of sweetness. If you sing a sad or a playful song Whilst you play your string instrument, 0 the wonder, 0 the wonderfully fair world That steals my brain and my heart away. The runs, The melismas, The crotchet rests, They are bonds and stimulations To the soul: your eyes are the dart from the little boy who comes from Dion's line. Doris, empty out the boxes That hold your tender expressions of love. Supply seductive looks, smiles and songs That will lull the senses into sleep. Of what are you afraid? My soul, You enjoy My flesh That has been much burdened By Cupid's arrow. Hasten your steps. Before the fierce blaze caused by that little boy Makes him my soul's master.
