Engelse tekst

I? Evan (*1), groote Vader!
I? Evan, uit uw ader
Vloed dat zielverkwikkend' nat,
Daar geen druk, of ramp op vat!
Liber, Bromius, Inachus!
Ev?e,(*2) I?chus, Bacchus, (*3)
Zoon van Semel? gebaard,
Gy zyt eer en offer waard.

(*1): proost!
[12] After this, one of the Bacchants ceremoniously calls for a drink sacrifice to Bacchus. In
doing so, he names his mother Semel?, who was pregnant by Jupiter when she was visited by
him in the form of a flash of lightning. She didn't survive it, but the fruit could be saved from
her womb: Bacchus.

Second of the Bacchants:

I? Evan (*1), great father!
I? Evan, from your artery
That's all inspiring fluid flows,
One that sadness and disaster cannot hold!
Liber, Bromius, Inachus!
Ev?e (*2), I?chus, Bacchus, (*3)
Son born by Semel?,
You are worthy of a sacrifice.

(*1): Your health!
(*2): Cheer by Bacchants
(*3): Liber, Bromius and Iachus are other names for
Bacchus. Inachus is the father of Io (who was changed into a cow by Zeus); apparently he is compared with Iachus here.
