| 4. A BALD NIT SHANTY
The song of the 'bald nit', a poor man who couldn't manage to maintain his wife and children, and sought solace by sailing to the land of plenty in the East Indies.
Shanty of a down-and-out Tune: Oriental, I said, Oriental, Or: Oh Holy Town of Bethlehem.
It is now a bad time! A bald nit can't earn much, and what one has, one loses, apart from desperate straits.
If I were alone, it would be no problem, but wife and children are a burden to me. My craft is as good as dead, nothing better than to sail far away.
I regard the East Indies as sweet and valuable, they are praised by many men, because if everything has been consumed here, then one can still be a gentleman there.
Oh rich and widely praised chain of islands, who can destroy your wealth? Because if there is a land of plenty, then one will find it in the East Indies.
The drum sounds, make you ready, it's a journey of few years, all of you who want to sail in the ship The Crowned Peace to the Realm of Jaketra. (*1)
Adieu, my wife and children all, I am going to fetch a good haul; When I come back to be with you, then I shall pay everyone in gold.
(*1) the old Jayakarta, devastated by the Dutch in 1619.
