12. AAN ALLE MATROOSEN: ALGEMEEN ARTYKEL-BRIEF
Twee canons uit de tijd van de Engelse oorlogen over de bereidheid tot vechten van de matrozen. De eerste canon bevat de bepaling uit de artikelbrief (het uittreksel van de krijgsartikelen dat aan de manschappen werd voorgelezen) die de doodstraf in het vooruitzicht stelt voor wie niet wil vechten. De matrozen antwoorden met een tegencanon dat zij best willen vechten mits de leiding dapper meevecht - zoals vice-admiraal Maarten Tromp - en niet er tussen uit knijpt als het gevaarlijk wordt - zoals fiscaal Mr. Jan van Wouw, die in 1665 'uut de vloote geloopen' was.
Algemeen Artykel-brief, geschooten uyt een Canon met 4 Stemmen, te singen of op allerley Speeltuygh te speelen, ook met 4 Trompetten lustigh door malkander te steeken.
Wil je nu vechten? zoo krijgje tot loon,
Een Penning of Keten van Goude heel schoon;
Maer wilje niet vechten zo krijgje een strop,
Al waer je een Prins zo verliesje u kop.
| 12. TO ALL SAILORS: GENERAL ARTICLE LETTER
Two rounds from the time of the English wars about sailors' willingness to fight. The first round includes the definition from the article letter (the extract from the articles of war) that says those who don't want to fight face the death penalty. The sailors answer with a counter round that they are quite willing to fight as long as their leaders fight too - like Vice-Admiral Maarten Tromp - and don't try to escape when things get dangerous - like fiscal Jan van der Wouw.
