[16] MOET MY LACEN U VRIENDELIC SCHIJN

Moet my lacen dijn vriendelijck schijn
Dus pijnlijc zijn,
Ghi liefste mijn,
In u ooghen, gelijck dat everswijn
Dangerues is int bescheyden.

Dan ghi mineren also wel,
Dat is: midts dijns wijs beraden,
Wiens troost ic derf, noch een cranck ghestel,
Hoe dat herte snel
Doet u bevel
Int storten van uwen soeten rel
Die mi niet en can versaden.
Neemt mi doch in ghenaden.

Mijn reynste lief, vol eeren, benijdt
Ghi selve zijt,
Ick kendt, ick lijdt.
Beware u God gebenedijt.
Dijn sien is so vol weelden,
Wiens wesen so reyn, so eerbaer zijt!
Ter werelt wijt,
Met dij verblijt,
Ick beminne u als uus levens tijt.
Wat batet dat ict hele?
Ghi en moecht mi niet vervelen.

[16] MUST, ALAS, THE LOVELY LOOK IN YOUR EYES

Must, alas, the lovely look in your eyes
Be as painful,
O my dearest,
As the wild boar
Is dangerous, as is plain to see?
Even if my heart had the lightness of pearls
And the purity of rubies,
You fill my heart
With grief, as water in the Rhine.
I suffer from all sides
Have pity on me.

Oh my loveliest liveliest lovely,
All my torments
None can lighten
As well as you,
This way: with your wise counsel,
Whose comfort I must do without, sorry fellow that I still am,
As soon as your heart awakes
To follow your command
And pour out your sweet refrains
Which cannot satisfy me.
Receive me in your grace.

My purest love, so honorable,
You yourself are menaced,
I know, I admit it.
May the God of all blessing keep you.
To see you gives such a wealth of joy,
Whose being is so pure, so honorable
In all the world.
If I but may be joyful with you
I shall love you as long as you live.
What good is it that I keep silence?
You could never be too much for me.
