[2] VOORSPEL
Na den Ouverture of voorgaande Maatgespel, ziet men in een Tooneel, verbeelden een Paleis. In een Voorspel nodigt Dichtkunde haar vriendinnen Maatzang (muziek) en Danskunst uit bij te dragen aan de opera waarvoor zij het libretto aan het schrijven is. Deze verklaren zich bereid.
Dichtkunde: [recitatief]
Terwyl mijn veder aangedreeven,
Om nieuw vermaak aan 't volk te geeven,
Zyn' eerste proef heeft voortgebragt,
Wenscht hy, รด trouwe Speelgenooten!
Dat gy deez' yver niet veracht;
Maar door uw bystant wilt vergrooten.
[air] Zoo bloey de kunst!
Zoo win men gunst,
By elk, die kunst waardeert,
En bloeiend' yver eert.
Maatzang: [recitatief]
Ik zal met uw gedicht myn groot vermoogen paaren,
Schakeerende 't geluid van stemmen, fluiten, snaaren:
Door rijzen, en daalen, van toonen, en maaten,
Droefheid, vreugd', ja alle drift,
Die gy afbeeld in geschrift,
Als bekrachtigd hooren laaten.
Maatzang, en Dichtkunde, te zamen:
[air] Zoo bloei de kunst! etc.
Danskunst: [recitatief]
Laat ons Grieken, en Romen
Nader-komen!
Uw opzet maakt myn' voeten gaande;
'k Zal keerende, buigende, draaiende, staande,
Zwierende,
Stierende
Lichaam, en tred,
De maat, door u gezet,
Navolgen met langzaame schreden,
Op trip'lende treden.
Danskunst, Dichtkunde, en Maatzang, te zaamen:

After the overture one sees a stage that represents a palace, according to the libretto. In a
Prelude, Poetry invites her friends Music and Dance to contribute to an opera for which she is
writing the libretto. They agree.
Poetry: [recitative]
While the quill I use
To give the people new enjoyment,
Has produced its first tests
It wishes
That you, trusty female friends, will not scorn this ardour,
But will offer your help to increase it.
[air] May art blossom!
May people win the respect
Of anyone who values art
And honours blossoming ardour.
Music: [recitative]
I shall add my great power to your poem,
Varying the sound of voices, flutes and strings
And through the rise and fall of tones and rhythms,
I will amplify sadness,
And joy, yes all emotions
That you paint in your notebook.
Music and Poetry together:
[air] May art blossom! etc.
Dance: [recitative]
Let us equal all Greece and Rome!
Your initiative makes my feet move;
I shall steer my body and tread
As I turn, stoop, bend, stand,
whirl,
In the rhythm you play,
With slow paces
With tripping footsteps.
