In deze liedtekst klaagt een vrouw over hoe haar man veranderd is, door lid te worden van een vrijkorps (vrijwilligersleger). Het eerste Nederlandse vrijkorps ontstond in 1783 in Utrecht, en werd opgericht door patriotten. Het was een organisatie die de burgerij leerde met een geweer om te gaan.
